Stickers as Reinforcers in Motor Speech Therapy

Quick little reinforcers that build to a bigger reward: animal-face sticker sets for younger kids and paint-by-sticker mosaics for older ones.

Hi, it's Nicole coming in from the NYU Motor Speech Lab, still talking reinforcers in motor speech therapy. One of the things we love to use here at the NYU Motor Speech Lab is stickers, and I have a couple of things I like to do.

I love these animal face stickers. In this case it's a butterfly, a cow, an elephant, a bunny. What we do is a block for each item they want to pick to create their face, and at the end they have a beautiful face. There are other ones you could get; I get these on Amazon all the time. Here's a caterpillar, and here's another butterfly, or a dragonfly.

The key is quick little reinforcers, and I really like ones that then culminate in a bigger reward. So in these instances, you have a final picture.

For the older kids, what I really love are these paint-by-sticker books. They're very similar to paint by number, and you can see the different themes here. Basically, the kid picks an animal; in this instance it's a sea turtle. Then for their blocks, they're working on the stickers. Maybe they get two stickers for each block, or three. And at the end of the session, they have a beautiful mosaic sea turtle, or whichever one they picked out.

More to come. Hope this was helpful.
