At New York University's Motor Speech Lab, led by Dr. Maria Grigos, research focuses on speech motor control and the relationship between speech motor control and sound production. Currently, the NYU MSL is investigating the efficacy of motor-based treatments in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) & Nicole serves as the Lead SLP on this initiative.

Nicole’s connection to NYU runs deep.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders at NYU and went on to complete her Master’s at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Maria Grigos—now Director of the NYU Motor Speech Lab. In 2002, Nicole returned to NYU as a Clinical Supervisor and began collaborating with Dr. Grigos on research projects. She joined the Motor Speech Lab full time in 2020 as the lead speech-language pathologist on an NIH-funded treatment study for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).
In addition to her clinical and research roles, Nicole has served as an adjunct professor in the department for the past 23 years, mentoring and training future clinicians. She also manages the lab’s Instagram account, which is dedicated to pediatric motor speech disorders and supporting fellow clinicians in making the shift to motor-based therapy. Nicole’s work has been recognized with two honors during her full-time tenure in the lab: the STAR Award and the 5-Year Researcher Award.
It is a profound honor to help children learn how to talk—that moment they realize they can move their articulators to sequence speech sounds and begin getting their point across verbally, that moment is magic.
I love teaching graduate students and current clinicians how to work with children with motor speech disorders. As a research clinician for many years at NYU, I have learned so many practical strategies to engage young children in therapy that can be intense and challenging.
